Hardware Evolution

Exploded Views> Exploded Views is a reflection on the essence of the technological progress and how the cutting edge of today becomes an outdated approach of tomorrow. Following the assembly of a speculative hardware system, Sensor.Graphics is imagining how large-scale technological structures could be designed and what would be the principles of their existence.
> Constantly accelerating, the technological development is an embodiment of the never-ending human desire to reach new levels of thought. In our era, we became witnesses of many breakthroughs, and they never stop. No invention is final, and new data is always emerging about things that we thought we already knew well.
> There are inventions that continue to exist together with their predecessors, and there are some that integrate parts of the old into the new. This augmentation happens due to different reasons. In some cases, the underlying tool or method of an older technology can be used in the new one — telephone became widespread because of using the existing physical infrastructure of telegraph.
> In others, including some elements of the older invention made it easier for people to move on to the new one, especially in digital interfaces — the examples of this are usage of parameters of exposure and ISO in digital cameras and skeuomorphism in early mobile apps.
> With many elements integrated inside them, modern technologies are intricate structures that are constantly rethought and reorganized. Being extensions of human abilities, they are changing together with us and our culture.
Growing interconnectedness through communication networks makes the networks of relationships between different technologies and humans visible and results in complicated artificial ecosystems of hardware and software.
> Humans are also an important part of these entangled networks. Our minds and senses are included into the technological structures, and our interpretation of the world is enhanced and supported by technologies. With the rise of artificial intelligence, not just our activities, but our thought process becomes augmented by technological. We are not anymore alone as creators, and technology is already reproducing and building itself through the contact with people.
> The project depicts a speculative hardware structure assembling from its smallest parts to the large megastructures.
> Including many layers and functions, it is a complex system of sensors, circuits, coolers, and connectors packed together following a sophisticated design language.
> Its representation is inspired by the film Powers of Ten by Ray and Charles Eames that captures the difference in scale between various structural levels of our material world and similarities between them: from atoms to galaxies.
> In the same way, the camera in Exploded Views moves between different elements and zooms out to show the massive size of the structure and the resemblance of the layer.
> Starting with a swarm of sensors in a technological ‘primordial soup’, we move across carefully designed layers. Each of them is different from other, but all of them are defined by the common design language and subtle materials.
> The functionality of the layers relies on their structure, and there are many variations to the shapes inside the device. Its structure is inspired by complex biological systems: dozens of smaller objects are packed in a way that uses the available space efficiently. Combined with minimal functionalism, this biomimicry proposes a new approach for the future of industrial design.
